Checkout Privileges
The Start-Kilgour Memorial Library extends checkout privileges to the following
individuals: students, faculty and staff of Simpson University, students and
faculty of Shasta Bible College, students and faculty of Shasta College and
local clergy. All eligible patrons not associated with Simpson University must
complete an application to borrow library materials before checking out
circulating material. Individuals who are granted checkout privileges accept all
patron responsibilities including overdue fees, material charges, etc. See
fines for a detailed
explanation of overdue and replacement charges.
Circulation Desk
To borrow library materials, take them to the Circulation Desk located just
inside the main entrance to the library. Patrons need their library photo ID
cards for this process. When returning library materials, use the return slot at
the Circulation Desk or the outdoor book return located by the library's back
door near the loading area. If patrons return borrowed books elsewhere, the
check-in system is bypassed, and they may receive overdue notices. The
Circulation Desk is shut down five minutes before closing. Material brought to
the desk after this time will be held and can be checked out on the next library
business day.

Loan periods
Circulating materials: The circulating collection includes books located
in the library's main stacks, oversize materials, curriculum material and the
audio cassette collection. Most materials that circulate may be checked out for
28 days and usually may be renewed only once. Library users are encouraged to
renew books and other materials online (see renew
instructions). Patrons may also renew items by telephone. However, if
another patron has placed a hold on an item, the library catalog system will not
renew it. If renewing material by telephone, a patron must have the barcode
number for each item and his/her Simpson identification number ready before
making the call.
Reference books, periodicals and atlas, Simpson, Tozer and Weggland collections:
These materials do not circulate. A $10.00 fine per item will be charged to
anyone taking these materials from the library without permission.
Reserve materials: Reserve materials are those that instructors have
asked the library to place on limited circulation so all their students can use
them. Reserve materials are kept at the Circulation Desk and circulate for 2, 24
and 48 hour periods.
Videos and DVDs: Only Simpson University faculty may check these
resources out of the library. Students may view them on a TV/Player unit in the
library. Those wishing to do so must leave some form of valid identification
(student ID card or driver's license) with a library employee for the duration
of the viewing session. |
+ Fines updated 1/11/2006
Damaged materials
Fees for damaged materials include repair or replacement costs plus a $10.00
service charge.
Fine notices
The date due card is a reminder of the day an item is due back in the library.
As a service, the library sends out overdue notices, fine notices and
statements. The library, however, levies the fine even if the patron has not
received notification. To view the status of materials checked out, refer to the
section How to renew your books online
(steps 1-6).

|
$0.25 per day

|
The library charges fines for overdue materials at the above rate until they are
more than 21 days overdue. On the 22nd day the materials are overdue, the library
considers them lost. At that time, the library charges $10.00 plus the replacement
cost (current retail or out-of-print price) for each lost item. The library then
deletes the fines that accumulated during the previous 21 days. Students are given
sixty to ninety days to pay or dispute fines, service charges or materials
replacement fees. Between the first and fifteenth of every month, the library
transfers to student accounts charges that have been carried by the library for a
minimum of sixty days. |
+ How to find library materials updated 1/18/2006
Online catalog
The online catalog displays the Library of Congress call numbers and
bibliographic information for library materials. (See below for a discussion of
call numbers.) It also identifies materials as "in library" or "Due xx-xx-xxxx"
(where the x characters represent the month, day and year). PCs dedicated to
accessing the online catalog are located next to the central staircase, behind
the Information Desk. The URL for the library's online catalog is
http://library.simpsonuniversity.edu/search.
Book and audiovisual collections
The library uses the Library of Congress Classification System. In order to
distinguish subject areas, this system uses letters and numbers arranged into a
unit termed call number. The top line of the call number consists of at
least one letter of the alphabet and indicates the broad discipline. The second
line stands for a subdivision within the discipline.

- BR - HX (main downstairs wing)
- J - KZ (overflow room)
- L - MT (main downstairs wing)
- N - NX (overflow room)

Periodicals
Most periodicals are kept in closed stacks, meaning that patrons do not have
direct access to them. The most recent issues of select periodicals are located
on the mezzanine. For journals shelved in closed stacks, requests should be made
at the information or circulation desk. Periodicals cannot be taken outside
library premises. A listing of the library's periodical holdings is available on
this site's journal page.

+ Library equipment updated 1/12/2006
Audiovisual equipment
A video projector, camcorders, DVD player, VCR/TV units, CD players,
audiocassette recorders and slide projectors are available for on-campus use by
student organizations and for classroom use by students unless faculty or the
Conferences and Events Department have reserved them. However, they are not
available for personal use. Students wanting to use the AV equipment must fill
out a form that can be obtained at the Circulation Desk. The completed form
should include the signature of the faculty advisor of a student organization
or the teacher of the class for which the equipment is to be used. The student
must present the completed form to the library employee at the Circulation Desk
in order to reserve equipment. Patrons should also return all equipment to the
Circulation Desk. Students will be charged for the repair or replacement of
equipment damaged while it is in their possession (see "Damage to College
Property" in the Simpson University Student Handbook).
Media readers and copy machines
One public use photocopier is located on the ground floor against the outside
wall to the right of the central stairway. A microforms reader/printer is
located on the ground floor, against the outside wall to the left of the central
stairway. Single-sided copies are $0.10 each while double-sided copies are $0.20
each.
Internet
The library's public access computers are equipped with Internet access and the
Microsoft Office suite of software. Documents printed via the library's PCs may
be picked up at the Circulation Desk. The print charge is ten cents per page.
The cost of printouts not picked up are charged to library users' accounts when
the producer of printouts can be identified. |

+ Right to privacy updated 1/17/2006
|
Library patrons have all rights to privacy as required by law. Although patrons
have full access to their own account and circulation information upon request,
they do not have access to other patrons' information. Patrons must provide a
valid Simpson University ID card to access their accounts. By law, library staff
cannot reveal the identity of individuals using library material.
Confidentiality of patron records policy
- The Library has the responsibility to protect each individual library user's
right to privacy with respect to information sought or received and materials
consulted, borrowed or acquired.
- All patron records of the Library are confidential. Such records, whether
print or electronic, include but are not limited to, circulation records,
interlibrary loan requests, faculty book requests, and requests for and results
generated from online searches. The confidential information in these records
includes but is not limited to, subjects researched, materials consulted,
individual titles borrowed, and patron name, address, telephone number, birth
date, social security number, and identification number.
- With the exception of persons acting within the scope of their duties within
the operation of the library, patron records are disclosed only upon written
consent of the patron involved or under court order or subpoena.
- When an individual has urgent need for library material that has been
checked out by another, the Library staff will contact the individual who has
the material and ask the person if he/she is willing to return it
immediately.
- The implementation and interpretation of this policy is the responsibility
of the Director of Library Services.
This is a slight revision of the San Jose State University Library's Policy on
Confidentiality. |
+ Services updated 1/18/2006
Reader services librarians
The reader services librarians help library users find materials and conduct
research for course assignments. They help frame research strategies to assist
patrons in finding the best possible sources of information. The reader services
help desk is located at the bottom of the central stairs.
Interlibrary loan
Books and periodical articles not available locally can often be obtained
through interlibrary loan (ILL) from other libraries. A borrower should plan on
materials requested through ILL to take at least two weeks to arrive. Items that
are hard to find may take longer. The library provides online ILL request forms for this purpose.
Some libraries charge a large fee for materials ordered from them. Many other
libraries do not charge for books borrowed through ILL but charge if items, such
as periodical articles, have to be copied. To cover this expense the Simpson
library charges $0.10 per page for photocopies of requested periodical articles.
Although the library makes every effort to borrow materials from libraries that
do not charge for their services, sometimes charges cannot be avoided. The
library then passes the charges on to the patron who is responsible for paying
them. The borrowing and lending libraries pay the postage.
The lending library determines the due date. Renewals may be requested, but the
Simpson Library cannot guarantee that renewals will be granted. Renewals cannot
be requested on or after the due date. Fines for overdue materials and charges
to replace lost items are the responsibility of the person that requested the
ILL. |
+ Special material collections updated 1/12/2006
|
The Start-Kilgour Memorial Library has four special material collections.
The Weggland Collection is a collection of art books shelved in the
library's overflow room. Volumes in this collection do not circulate outside the
library.
The Simpson Collection contains books about the Christian and Missionary
Alliance and its founder, A. B. Simpson, as well as the writings of A. B.
Simpson. The books in this collection may be used only in the library, but
copies of many of them are available in the library's circulating collection.
Patrons needing books from this collection should ask a librarian for
assistance.
The Tozer Collection contains books and media by and about the prominent Christian and Missionary
Alliance preacher, A. W. Tozer. The books in this collection may be used only in the library, but most of the material is
duplicated in the library's circulating collection.
Patrons needing books from this collection should ask a librarian for
assistance.
The Curriculum Collection contains a small number of school textbooks.
These are shelved in the Reference Room at the end of the Oversize Book
Collection. Curriculum materials may be borrowed for 28 days.
The Children's Collection is located on the Mezzanine and includes
fiction and non-fiction. The library acquires Newbery and Caldecott medals
winners and ALA notable children's books. These materials may be borrowed for 28
days. |
+ Who can use the library? updated 1/18/2006
Primary users
The primary users of the Simpson University Library are current students,
faculty and staff. These individuals have full access to all library resources
and services under the appropriate guidelines.
Public use policy
The primary mission of the Simpson University Library is to satisfy the
information needs of current Simpson University students, faculty, and staff as
they relate to the educational role of the University. Although the University
Library is not a public one, it offers two levels of limited public access to
its resources and services.
Limited access with borrowing privileges
The Library extends borrowing privileges to Simpson University alumni, area
clergy, and Shasta College and Shasta Bible College students and faculty.
(Shasta College and Shasta Bible College reciprocate by extending library
privileges to Simpson University students and faculty.) These users:
- Must show some form of photo identification (such as a driver's license or
valid student/faculty ID) when borrowing materials;
- May have up to 5 items checked out at any time;
- Assume responsibility for keeping track of due dates and returning or
renewing library materials on time;
- Accept liability for overdue fines for materials not returned on time and
charges for lost or damaged materials;
- May not borrow additional materials while having overdue materials or unpaid
library fines or charges;
- May use microforms, reference books, periodicals, and audiovisual resources
within the library;
- May use the library's computers but should voluntarily yield to Simpson
University students, faculty, and staff and limit sessions to 30 minutes unless
other similarly equipped computer workstations are vacant;
- May not access subscription databases licensed for use by Simpson University
faculty, students, and staff; and,
- Are not eligible for interlibrary loan services through Simpson
University.
Limited access without borrowing privileges
The Library extends limited library privileges to other public users such as
visiting scholars and Redding area residents. These users:
- May use microforms, books, periodicals, and audiovisual resources within the
library;
- May use the library's computers but should voluntarily yield to Simpson
University students faculty, and staff and limit sessions to 30 minutes unless
other similarly equipped computer workstations are vacant; and,
- May not access subscription databases licensed for use by Simpson University
faculty, students, and staff.
For library services that exceed the limits of this policy, public users are
referred to their respective primary library service providers such as a public
library and/or another academic library. |
About the website
+ Online guide updated 1/24/2006
Web terminology and design
While reading this online help section, users need to be aware of some
linguistic conventions. "Click" or "clicking" refers to a single click of the
left mouse button. Likewise, "double-click" refers to two clicks of the left
mouse button in quick succession. Any other mouse function such as right or
middle mouse button actions will be explicitly stated as such (e.g.,
"right-click"). The terms "link" and "linking" refer to hypertext links, words,
phrases or images that users may "click" on and be directed to another page or a
different area on the same page. Text rendered in bold characters (bold)
denotes words or phrases the user should expect to see on library web pages. If
there is any terminology or phrasing that needs clarification or if there are
issues not addressed on this page, please
email the library
webmaster.
Page elements
Left sidebar: Many library pages have a sidebar located on the left side
of the page, providing links to all main library resources and services
(Home, Search the catalog, Online resources, Journal
holdings, View your record, Reference questions,
Suggestions, Books to acquire, Information,
Services and SULA). These links allow users to quickly jump to
main library areas regardless of the current page. Current news items are posted
below these links. |
+ Primary content areas updated 3/22/2006
Home page
The library home page is the gateway to all resources and services provided by
the Simpson University library. From it users can search the library catalog or
check journal availability, access other catalogs, subscription databases or
web search engines or request help concerning their library needs.
Search the catalog
Use this page to search the library's online catalog for research materials This
tool primarily indexes physical resources found in the library; however, certain
web-based resources are also accessible in this fashion.
Online resources
This page lists resources individually and according to 10 different types and
25 different subjects. Two sets of links are provided for patrons, one for those
accessing resources on-campus and the other for off-campus access. If you are accessing resources in the library, in a
classroom or in a campus office, use the links provided in the Library and
classroom users column. If you are accessing resources in one of the dorms
or anywhere off-campus, use the links provided in the Dorm and off-campus
users column. By using these links, patrons can access numerous books,
encyclopedias and dictionaries, general reference materials, government
documents, indexes and abstracts, periodical articles and search engines. Each
resource listing includes a linked resource name (i.e.
Britannica Online) and the
access method. The listing may also include a link
to specific resource information and a brief description of the resource.
Access method
The six types of access methods are Local, Remote, Global,
Password, Pay-per-article and Subscription. Local
indicates that the resource is accessible on-campus (except the dorms).
Remote indicates that the resource is accessible off-campus (including
the dorms) with a Simpson University ID. However, only current faculty, staff
and students are eligible. Global indicates that the resource is freely
accessible worldwide from any computer with an Internet connection.
Password indicates that the resource is accessible globally with valid
user identification and password. To obtain a password, talk to a member of the
library staff. Pay-per-article indicates that the
resource front end and search functions are accessible globally; however, users
must pay a fee to access individual articles. And Subscription indicates
that the user must pay a periodic fee to access site content. Many resources are
accessible using a variety of these methods.
FirstSearch resource information
Many of the library's online resources are provided by FirstSearch. Although
FirstSearch provides information pages for its databases, users cannot directly
access them outside the FirstSearch domain. To access information on an
individual FirstSearch database, click on the FirstSearch resource link you wish
to access. An information symbol
should appear to the right of the database name in the Search in
database: field. Clicking on this linked image will provide information on
the individual database.
Journal holdings
These pages index the Start-Kilgour Memorial Library journal holdings. The main
page also includes the list of newspaper titles to which the library
subscribes.
View your record
Access this page to renew
books, view items checked out, holds placed on resources and fines you have
accrued, utilize the preferred searches you have saved, and view your unique
patron information.
Reference questions
Patrons should access the online reference desk if they are having trouble
finding specific library resources.
Suggestions
Those that wish to submit general suggestions regarding library matters may do
so by clicking on this link in the left sidebar.
Books to acquire
The general library public may submit suggestions regarding new library
materials with this form. Faculty should submit material requests in hard-copy
form through the Technical Services office.
Information
The Information page (your current location) provides users with information
concerning library hours, staff contacts, resource location, services provided,
policies and an explanation of the library site.
Services
These pages allow users to submit reserve material, interlibrary loan and
instructional services requests (reserve and instructional services requests are
restricted to Simpson faculty). In order for requests to be filled, all required
request form fields (indicated by an asterisk *) must be completed. Please read
the instructions on library services pages for detailed instructions.
SULA
The Simpson University Library Assistant provides a series of randomly generated
quizes whose purpose is to educate patrons regarding library use. |
